Finding the right lender is crucial when starting on the sometimes intimidating home buying journey. Picking the right lender for your individualized needs is just as important as hiring the right Realtor to find your dream home.  Before deciding on a lender here are a few things to keep in mind.

Talk to Your Real Estate Agent: A good Realtor will be able to provide you with lender recommendations. Since Realtors work closely with lenders on a day to day basis it is always a good idea to talk to your agent and ask who they recommend. When you speak with the lender, be sure to say it was a recommendation from your agent. Lenders value the relationships they have with the agents they work with regularly and this will help ensure they will do everything in their power to provide you with a seamless closing.

Go Lender Shopping: Don’t just talk to one lender. Shop around for the lowest rates and closing costs. Do your homework and ask all the right questions. What are points? How much will the points reduce my rate by? How much are closing costs? What other fees exist? What is the PMI? How long is the loan? Is it a fixed interest? How long are their turnaround times on things such as pre-approval letters, appraisal, closing? What are the down payment requirements? What happens if your rate lock expires before closing?
